Judson M. Stein is based in the firm’s Newark, New Jersey office and is the head of the firm’s Trusts & Estates Practice Group.

Mr. Stein has more than 30 years experience in legal matters relating to the protection and enhancement of businesses and estates, as well as the transfer of assets to heirs and other beneficiaries. His trust and estate practice helps clients understand their options for estate and gift planning, selection of fiduciaries, transfers of family businesses, life insurance, retirement planning, trusts, charitable giving, health care, education funding and gift techniques. His elder law practice assists seniors and their families with life care planning, Medicaid and asset protection, health care directives and living wills. Mr. Stein’s corporate and business law practice includes business formation and structure, partnership and operating agreements, shareholder agreements, business succession planning and all varieties of contract drafting and negotiation. His tax practice provides guidance to business owners and individuals and representation before federal and state tax authorities.

Jud frequently lectures before various professional audiences on tax and estate planning matters, including the New Jersey State Bar Association’s Probate and Trust Law Symposium (Life Insurance Trusts), the New Jersey Society of Certified Public Accountants (Family Limited Partnerships), and the New Jersey Institute for Continuing Legal Education (NJICLE) on Estate Administration. He also co-authored a handbook for NJICLE titled “Estate Administration Basics”.

Mr. Stein is a Fellow of the American College of Trust and Estate Counsel (ACTEC), a professional association of lawyers skilled in the preparation of wills and trusts, estate planning, probate procedure, and administration of trusts and estates of decedents, minors and incompetents. ACTEC Fellows are selected on the basis of professional reputation and ability in the fields of trusts and estates and on the basis of having made substantial contributions to these fields through lecturing, writing, teaching and bar activities.

He is a member of the New Jersey and Essex County Bar Associations. He is also a member of the National Academy of Elder Law Attorneys and a former Adjunct Professor at Seton Hall University School of Law for nearly 20 years.

Mr. Stein received his Bachelor of Science in Economics, with a major in Finance, from the University of Pennsylvania in 1975. He received his Juris Doctor from Rutgers University School of Law in Newark in 1978 and received an LL.M. in Taxation from New York University School of Law in 1981.
